The Universe has Your Back: What Does FRIEND Stand For?

the universe has your back

What does it mean when we say, “The Universe has Your Back”? The broad meaning would be letting go of fear and trust that everything will work out for the best. This meaning also embraces the word FRIENDs. We make friends everywhere we go in every phase of life. A lot of us have friends from childhood, college, business and romantic relationships. We even meet friends through friends and make friends of friends.  Every day we receive an invitation to make a new friend on Facebook. It’s the perfect place to infinitely expand our group of friends and keep score of how well we are doing in the friend department, but is it an accurate accounting of being a good friend?

What does it mean to be a friend? Randy Newman enlightens us in the song, “You’ve got a friend in me.” Randy explains “we stick together . . . it’s me and you.” I like to say,

“I need you, you need me, and we need each other.”Friend

After all, how much fun would life be, if we had to do it alone?  Friendship is the beginning and the end. It’s the first brick in building a foundation for any relationship. You have to make a friend before you can build a partnership. You have to be a friend before you can be a lover. Friends stand behind us like a backbone to support us, through the good and bad times, to the end.

Remember this acronym for what a FRIEND is:

FREE

Allow others to be FREE to be me. The only thing that can stand the tests of time is built upon a foundation of truth.

RESPECT

Respect yourself and others. You can’t get what you don’t give, so the only way to earn it is to be it first. There are three A’s to help you be respectful: 1) Accept people for who they are, 2) Allow friends to be where they are on their spiritual path, and 3) Appreciate your friends for the role they have played in your spiritual growth.

INTIMACY

Break down the word phonetically and the word translates into “in-to-me-see.” Be willing top open, vulnerable and brave enough to look inside and share a piece of your self. When you share the true you, others will open up and connect with you.

EQUAL

People like to see their own reflection. Like attracts like. People of equal mind, heart and soul hang out together so they can challenge each other to learn together. Throw out superiority and inferiority and equalize the playground to make more friends.

NURTURE

Take care of your peeps. Love them, feed them, and give them a soft safe space to come home to and a shoulder to cry on. That’s what mom did, right? People are drawn towards people that take care of them.

DESIRE

Friendship comes from a desire to pull people together. Friendship doesn’t form from force. It feels more like a pull, not a push. Plant the seed of desire to be a good friend and you will naturally attract more friends.

Mastering the art of friendship is a skill that will pay off forever! Move beyond Facebook friend scorecard and step up by remembering what FRIEND stands for and following the friendship rules.
